Instant messaging

When you meet someone for the first time, do you ask their ASL? Do you LOL if they come out with something funny, and say 'CU L8er' when you finish the conversation? If you know what I'm talking about, then you are probably already a user of Instant Messaging, or IM.
The idea behind IM is simple. When you send someone an email, you don't know when you will get a reply. Your friend might not check their messages, or might not use that email address anymore. With IM, however, a program on your computer tells you when a friend is online. You can then send a message to your friend, who can type a reply instantly. To do this, you need an IM program, such as AIM, ICQ, MSN Messenger or Windows IM.
IM is already hugely popular in the USA, where people spend five times more time online than in Europe. However, IM is starting to take off in the UK, with over 3,000 people signing up to MSN Messenger alone every day. Worldwide, AIM, the IM service provided by AOL is by far the most popular. It has 195 million users who send about 1.6 billion messages every day. ICQ, which is owned by AOL, has about 140 million messengers, and MSN and Windows IM put together have about 75 million users.
The advantages of IM are obvious, but there is one very important disadvantage. You can only contact someone on the same network as you. If your friend is using AIM, and you are using MSN, you cannot talk to each other. This makes IM less useful than it should be. Imagine if you could not send an email from Hotmail to Yahoo. However, things look like they will change soon.
In general, the future looks bright for IM. Many programs also allow you to have voice conversations, have video conferencing - this means you can see the other person using a webcam - and also let you swap pictures, music and other files.
So, perhaps we'll all soon be asking someone's age, sex and location (ASL), and laughing out loud (LOL) when they say something funny. See you later! (CU L8er)

Valentine's Day

Read the story:
It's that time of the year when couples show their love for each other by sending cards, flowers and chocolates. But Valentine's Day is not only about public displays of affection: in recent years it has also become big business. In the UK alone, more than 20 million pounds is spent on flowers, whilst in the United States over 1 billion dollars is forked out on chocolates.
Although Valentine's Day has become a global industry with more than 80 million roses sold worldwide, the origins of the day are unclear and hidden inthe mists of time. Nobody knows exactly who St Valentine was, although some historians suggest he was a Roman martyred in the third century AD by a Roman Emperor. It is said that the first recorded Valentine's card was sent by the imprisoned Duke of Orleans in 1415. It is believed that he sought solace from his confinement by writing love poems to his wife.
Valentine's Day, or its equivalent, is now celebrated in many countries around the world. However, the traditions often differ from place to place. In Japan, for example, it is customary for the woman to send chocolates to the man, whilst in Korea April 14th is known as 'Black Day' and is when the unfortunate men who received nothing on Valentine's Day gather to eat noodles and commiserate with each other.
Technological developments have also played their part in keeping Valentine's Day relevant in the 21st century. Valentine's e-cards have been all the rage in recent years. However, internet security experts urge web users to be wary as malicious hackers could use e-cards to spread viruses and spyware.
Valentine's cards can also be used for less than romantic purposes. Police in the UK city of Liverpool sent Valentine's cards to criminals who failed to appear in court or have not paid fines. The cards contained the verse, 'Roses are red, violets are blue, you've got a warrant and we'd love to see you'. Who says romance is dead?

Susan Boyle: unlikely superstar?

Read the story:
Less than a few weeks ago Susan Boyle was a virtual unknown. However, since auditioning for Britain’s Got Talent, a televised talent competition, she has experienced a stratospheric rise to fame. A YouTube video of her audition has been watched by more than 26 million people, making it one of the most watched videos on the internet in recent times. It is undeniable that technology such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter has helped to spread the word about Susan’s performance.
So just what is it about Susan that the people find so fascinating? Arguably, it is the fact she is such a class act. However, many have suggested that her biggest appeal lies in her unassuming persona.
Susan’s persona and appearance have been somewhat controversial and the initial reaction to her audition has made many people question whether they are guilty of judging a book by its cover. With her plain Jane, middle-aged looks and her no-nonsense approach to life, Susan is perhaps the most unlikely star to be discovered of late.
Commenting on her rise to fame, Max Clifford, a renowned PR guru, said that the massive public interest in her is partly due to people having to challenge their own assumptions and prejudices.
So what’s next for Susan? For the moment, she is preparing for her next appearance on Britain’s Got Talent and she is the odds-on favourite to win.
Looking forward, with talk of record contracts and celebrity duets, it is very likely that we’ll soon be seeing a Susan Boyle album in the charts!

MADOFF FACES SENTENCING IN COURT

Bernard Madoff listened to emotional statements from his victims at a New York court as he awaited sentencing for running a $65bn (£40bn) fraud.
Madoff, 71, apologised and said that he would "live with this pain, this torment for the rest of my life".
Madoff pleaded guilty to 11 charges in March and could face a sentence of up to 150 years in jail.
But his lawyer is asking for a 12-year sentence. It remains unclear if investors will get any money back.
District Judge Denny Chin, who is presiding over the case, said that the guidance range for sentencing was 150 years but he was not bound by it.
"I must impose a sentence that is reasonable," Judge Chin told the court.
Victims of the fraud have called for a tough sentence.
"Life has been a living hell. It feels like the nightmare we can't wake from," said Carla Hirshhorn, one of 10 victims to speak in the court.
"May your jail cell be your coffin," Michael Schwartz told Madoff.
Madoff, who wore a dark suit and lowered his eyes while listening to the witnesses, will also read a statement before the judge hands down a decision.

ASSET FORFEITED
In a preliminary hearing on Friday, Judge Chin ordered Madoff to forfeit $171bn in assets, while his wife Ruth had to forfeit more than $80m in net worth she claimed was hers.
The giant figure Madoff was ordered to forfeit was equal to the sum prosecutors said had passed through his investment firm over the years. In practice, however, such funds do not exist.
Under the order the Madoffs must sell a $7m Manhattan apartment where Ruth Madoff lives.
Other assets to be sold include an $11m estate in Palm Beach, Florida, a $4m home in Montauk and a $2.2m boat.
But an agreement with prosecutors has enabled Ruth Madoff to keep $2.5m in cash.
The trustee winding down the Madoff firm has collected $1.2bn to return to investors.
Life savings
Bernard Madoff has admitted defrauding thousands of investors in a Ponzi scheme which he said had been running since the early 1990s.
The 11 charges he pleaded guilty to included securities fraud and money laundering.

Speaking before the start of the court hearing, Ira Sorkin, Madoff's lawyer, said his client "will speak to the shame he has felt and to the pain he has caused".
"We seek neither mercy nor sympathy," said Mr Sorkin. But he has asked Judge Chin to "set aside the emotion and hysteria attendant to this case," as he determines the sentence.
However, the sentence is expected to be long.
"Given the enormous amount of funds he has stolen and the number of victims, the sentence is going to be very, very high," said Paul Radvany, a law professor at Fordham University in New York.
The hearing will take place in a courtroom that can accommodate 250 people.
Two separate rooms in lower Manhattan courthouse will house former investors and spectators to watch on closed-circuit TV.
Retirement
The list of Madoff's investors includes film director Steven Spielberg's charitable foundation, Wunderkinder.
UK banks were also among the victims with HSBC Holdings saying it had exposure of around $1bn. Other corporate victims were Royal Bank of Scotland and Man Group and Japan's Nomura Holdings.
But it is not just the elite and large firms who were victims of the fraud.
School teachers, farmers, mechanics and many others have also lost money.
Many had benefited from their investments until Madoff was arrested in December.

NASDAQ CHAIRMAN
Madoff started his financial career aged 22 with $5,000 from money made from summer holiday jobs such as working as a garden sprinkler installer in New York.
He then set up Bernard L Madoff Investment Securities in 1960.
His firm became one of the largest market-makers - matching buyers and sellers of stocks - and Madoff served as chairman of the Nasdaq stock exchange.
As well as wealthy individuals, investment advisory firms were key Madoff investors.
Madoff's firm was investigated eight times by the US Securities and Exchange Commission over the past 16 years, because it made exceptional returns.
But it was the global recession which effectively prompted Madoff's demise as investors, hit by the downturn, tried to withdraw about $7bn from his funds and he could not find the money to cover it.
Madoff estimated the fraud totalled $50bn, but prosecutors said that weeks before Madoff's arrest in December, the firm's statements showed a total of $65bn in its accounts.
He has always insisted he acted alone in masterminding the fraud.
The only other person who has been charged is his accountant David Friehling, 49, with aiding and abetting fraud, and four counts of filing false audit reports. He has been released on bail.
Though Mr Friehling was not charged with knowledge of the Madoff Ponzi scheme, he was charged with deceiving investors by falsely certifying that he audited the financial statements.

WHAT IS A PONZI SCHEME? A fraudulent investment scheme paying investors from money paid in by other investors rather than real profitsNamed after Charles Ponzi who notoriously used the technique in the United States in the 1920s Differs from pyramid selling in that individuals all tend to invest with the same person
Madoff victims lose life savings Suicide prompted by Madoff scandal Speaking before the start of the court hearing, Ira Sorkin, Madoff's lawyer, said his client "will speak to the shame he has felt and to the pain he has caused".

BEA yuan bonds have appeal
Katherine Ng (Monday, June 29, 2009)

The window of opportunity for retail investors to benefit from any yuan appreciation opens again tomorrow when the mainland unit of the Bank of East Asia (0023) offers yuan bonds. BEA is selling bonds worth 4 billion yuan (HK$4.53 billion), with 3 billion yuan earmarked for institutional investors
Investors will be paid a coupon of 2.8 percent. That is more than double the 1.29 percent HSBC China last week offered institutional clients for its two-year corporate bonds.

"The rate is reasonable and is comparable to the 3 percent coupon that mainland financials offered during 2007," said Stanley Wong Yuen-fai, director and deputy general manager at ICBC (Asia) (0349), in looking to the year when the yuan appreciated the fastest. He believes yuan bonds are attractive, especially as the savings rate for bank deposits is almost zero. Market participants said HSBC's 1.29 percent rate was not comparable because the Shanghai interbank offered rate, which the lender used, is not a common reference for Hong Kong and overseas investors.
"Yuan bonds in the secondary market are trading at around 3 percent," a trader said. "Although the yuan deposit rate in the mainland dropped significantly it did not affect rates in Hong Kong."

Wong said the latest yuan bonds should be able to offer a coupon of around 3 percent. The bonds could be attractive to local investors, who now have 54 billion yuan deposited in Hong Kong banks. The banks offer an interest rate of 0.7-0.8 percent. Additionally, Beijing's aim is to internationalize the yuan, so its appreciation will continue and benefit bond investors.

But potential investors should ensure they are properly briefed by bank staff, even if they have bought bonds before, executives of distributor banks said.
The Securities and Futures Commission has set stricter approval requirements in that bank staff should tell investors about the details and potential risks.
Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam- kuen and Mu Huaipeng, director-general, Financial Market Department of the People's Bank of China will attend the ceremony today to launch the yuan bonds.

Tall people earn more (18 May 2009)

SUMMARY:
Researchers in Australia have found that tall people earn higher wages than their shorter counterparts. They also found that chubby people earn more than those who are skinny.
Reporter: Nick Bryant

REPORT:
The long and short of this Australian report is that tall workers earn significantly more than their vertically challenged counterparts. A six foot man can expect a windfall of almost $750 a year.
The researchers found there were practical reasons why the size gap translated into a pay gap. Tall people were sometimes more capable of performing certain physical tasks, like reaching high shelves. But the discrepancy is explained mainly by discrimination, the simple fact that society tends to look on tall people as more powerful and smarter, even when they're not.
The study from the Australian National University also found that slimmer workers tend to get slimmer pay packets. Fat men earn 5% more than their slender colleagues.
Nick Bryant, BBC News, Sydney

VOCABULARY
the long and short of - a commonly used set expression said when you want to explain the general situation without giving details
vertically challenged - an indirect way of saying 'short'
counterparts - your counterpart is someone who is generally similar to you but different in a particular way (e.g. they come from a different country, or, as here, they are shorter than you)
windfall - here, money that you win or receive unexpectedly translated into - here, meant, caused, resulted in
discrepancy - a distinct difference between two things that should be the same discrimination - unfair treatment of someone because of prejudice about race, ethnicity, age, religion, gender or, as here, size
tend to get slimmer pay packets - usually earn less money
slender - slim, thin

Millionth English word imminent (10 June 2009)

SUMMARY
It is being claimed that the millionth word in the English language is about to be created. A US company which follows the use of language on the internet has made the prediction. However traditional dictionary makers aren't so sure.... .
Reporter: Lawrence Pollard

REPORT
The idea of the millionth word entering the English language is a brilliant bit of public relations for Texas-based Global Language Monitor. GLM runs a powerful search service which monitors web traffic. They make their money telling organisations how often their name is mentioned in new media, such as the internet.
What they can also do is search for newly coined words. Once a word has been used 25,000 times on social networking sites and such like, GLM declares it to be a new word. By their calculations a new word is created in English every 98 minutes, hence the estimate that the millionth word is about to be created.
If you talk to lexicographers, however, dictionary professionals, they tell a slightly different story. Dictionaries have tighter criteria about what constitutes a new word, for example, it has to be used over a certain period of time. Lexicographers will tell you that the exact size of English vocabulary is impossible to quantify, but if you accept every technical term or obscure specialist word then we're already way beyond a million. And if you restrict inclusion of specialist slang, then there are possibly three quarters of a million words in English. All of which is way beyond the 20 - 40,000 words that a fluent speaker would use, or the few thousand you could get by with in English. Basically, with 1.5 billion people speaking some version of the language, it's small wonder English is the fastest growing tongue in the world.

Illegal downloads (29 May 2009)

SUMMARY:
Around seven million people in the UK are involved in illegal downloads at huge cost to the economy - but changing attitudes is going to be tough. A report warns that criminalising people who download illegally may not be the right course.
Reporter:Rory Cellan-Jones

REPORT
The report for a body advising the government on copyright looks at consumer attitudes to illegal downloading. Researchers found 1.3 million people online on just one file-sharing network on a weekday and worked out that over a year, they were getting free access to material worth 120 billion pounds.

The report says seven million people who download illegally in the UK can't all be students, older people must also be involved. But it says there's uncertainty about what is or is not illegal, and the fact that so much on the internet is free only adds to the confusion.

The report warns the government that criminalising downloaders could have huge economic costs and might not even work.

VOCABULARY
body - here, organisation, institution
copyright - the legal right of either creative artists or publishers to control the use and reproduction of their original works
consumer attitudes to - here, how downloaders feel about
getting free access to - here, able to download without paying
must also be involved - here, look certain to be using illegal downloads as well there's uncertainty about - nobody knows for sure
adds to the confusion - makes the situation even less clear
criminalising - treating somebody as a criminal and/or making what they do punishable under the criminal law

MUSIC LEGEND MICHAEL JACKSON DIES (26 June 2009)

SUMMARY
Music legend Michael Jackson has died at the age of 50, after suffering a cardiac arrest at his home in Beverly Hills. Jackson, who had a history of health problems, had been due to stage a series of comeback concerts in the UK in July.

REPORT
Michael Jackson's body was airlifted from hospital to the coroner's office in downtown Los Angeles. TV stations here carried live coverage of the helicopter's journey. An autopsy will be carried out later today to establish the precise cause of his death.

Paramedics had been called to the Beverly Hills mansion Michael Jackson had been renting whilst he prepared for a series of fifty sold-out shows in London next month. The singer's brother Jermain told a news conference that after they failed to resuscitate him, Jackson was transferred to a nearby hospital where a team of doctors worked for more than an hour in a vain attempt to revive him.

Only a few hours earlier Michael Jackson had been rehearsing at a local sports stadium, but concerns about his fitness for the concert tour had already begun to circulate, amid reports that he was looking frail. Hundreds of fans have maintained a vigil outside the hospital to which he was taken, some to mourn his passing, others to celebrate his music.

For the all the controversy that surrounded the latter part of his career several commentators here have likened his musical legacy to that of Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Elvis Presley.

But by faith we eagly await through the Spirit the rightousness for which we hope. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. Galatians 5:5-6

2009/7/1
Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods. But now that you know God - or rather are known by God - how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable principles? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again? Galatians 4:8

2009/6/30
You are all sons of God through faith in Chris Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. Galatians 3:26

2009/6/29
Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. (Psalms 127:1)
若不是耶和華建造房屋, 建造的人就枉然勞力;
